Knit a cosy children's pullover with deep vertical ribs, relaxed dropped shoulders and generous balloon sleeves gathered above neat cuffs. The gently bloused body, crew neck and raised shoulder joins create a warm, textured everyday sweater.

Sizes and fit

Six sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years. Choose by the child's actual chest measurement and the finished dimensions, rather than age alone. Designed with approximately 10–18 cm / 4–7 in of positive ease.

Finished chest circumference: 63.1 / 69.2 / 75.4 / 81.5 / 87.7 / 93.8 cm (24.8 / 27.3 / 29.7 / 32.1 / 34.5 / 36.9 in), in size order.

Pattern details

• Skill level: intermediate to experienced.
• Worked flat from the bottom up in separate front, back and sleeve pieces; the neckband is worked in the round.
• Half fisherman's rib, increases within the rib, German short rows, raised three-needle shoulder bind-off, neck pickups and seaming.
• Bulky yarn, approximately 140–170 m / 153–186 yd per 100 g, worked with one strand.
• Yarn quantities by size: approximately 450 / 550 / 650 / 750 / 900 / 1050 m.
• Main needles: 6.5 mm / US 10½. Ribbing: 5.5 mm / US 9.
• Gauge: 13 stitches and 32 actual worked rows = 10 cm in blocked, relaxed half fisherman's rib.
