Knit a softly slouching children's beanie with a deep folded ribbed cuff and a pom pom at the gathered crown. The smooth stockinette body has a little extra length that falls gently toward the back, while the stretchy cuff sits comfortably around the head.

The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. Begin with a deep 2 × 2 ribbed cuff, change to the larger needles for the stockinette body, then work the crown decreases and gather the remaining stitches. Finish with a handmade pom pom and fold the cuff upward.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner; includes knitting in the round, knit and purl stitches, knit-two-together decreases and making or attaching a pom pom
  • Sizes: Six sizes covering approximately 1 to 10 years; choose by head circumference, 44–56 cm / 17.3–22 in, rather than age alone
  • Yarn: Soft DK-weight wool or wool blend with some resilience; approximately 120–205 m / 131–224 yd depending on size, including a moderately full pom pom. Purchasing at least 220 m / 241 yd gives a practical margin
  • Needles: 3.5 mm / US 4 for the ribbed cuff and 4 mm / US 6 for the body, or sizes needed to obtain gauge; circular needles plus magic loop or double-pointed needles for smaller circumferences and the crown
  • Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rounds = 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette after washing and blocking
  • Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure, ruler and a pom pom maker or cardboard
  • Construction: Bottom-up knitting in the round with a folded cuff, smooth body and gathered crown
