Knit a soft, roomy children's cardigan with raglan sleeves, an open standing collar and four buttons. Deep ribbed cuffs and hem balance the relaxed body, while a strand of fine mohair adds a gentle halo to the fabric.

The cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning with the collar in rows. German short rows shape the back neck, the body continues flat after the sleeves are placed on hold, and the sleeves are worked in the round. Seed-stitch button bands are picked up along the front edges.

• Skill level: Adventurous beginner to intermediate; includes short rows, raglan shaping, picked-up bands and sleeves worked in the round
• Sizes: Ten sizes for ages 3 to 12 years; choose by the child's chest measurement rather than age alone
• Yarn: One strand of DK or light worsted wool held together with one strand of lace-weight kid mohair and silk; approximately 320–715 m / 350–782 yd of each yarn, depending on size
• Needles: 6 mm / US 10 for the main fabric and sleeves; 5 mm / US 8 for the collar, ribbing and button bands, or sizes needed to obtain gauge
• Main gauge: 15 stitches and 22 rows = 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette after blocking
• Notions: Four 18–20 mm buttons, stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holders and a tapestry needle
• Construction: Seamless top-down raglan with body worked flat and sleeves in the round
