Knit an oversized open front cardigan with generous sleeves, dropped shoulders and broad folded cuffs. Jumbo stockinette stitches give it a soft, rounded texture, while a narrow turned hem and folded front edges create a simple finish. The cream, blush and sage effect shown comes from a variegated yarn.

This is a digital PDF knitting pattern, not a finished cardigan. Yarn, needles and other materials are not included.

  • Finished nominal body circumference: 110–170 cm / 43.3–66.9 in, depending on size
  • Designed for 25–35 cm / 9.8–13.8 in of positive ease
  • Worked flat in five pieces: one back, two mirrored fronts and two sleeves, then joined and seamed
  • Live shoulder joins, integral neck facing extensions and straight sleeve tops
  • Open front with folded edges, a turned hem and broad turn back cuffs

The finished body measurement is the back plus both front widths between the facing fold lines, excluding hidden facing and seam allowances. The cardigan is designed to remain open, with no front overlap. Choose your size using your bust measurement, the finished measurements and your preferred ease.

Yarn, needles and gauge

  • Jumbo weight, lofty wool or wool rich yarn, worked as a single strand
  • Main yarn: 380–520 m / 420–570 yd, depending on size; the estimates include reserve and swatching
  • Additional seaming yarn: 40 m / 44 yd of strong, smooth matching DK or worsted wool
  • Main needles: 19 mm / US 35 circular needles with an 80–100 cm / 32–40 in cable, used back and forth, or the size needed for gauge
  • Two spare needles or matching tips for the three needle joins
  • Blocked stockinette gauge: 4 stitches and 6 rows per 10 cm / 4 in
