Knit a pair of long striped leg warmers with soft slouchy folds and neat ribbed cuffs. Moss, brick red, warm ivory and muted plum create a cosy palette for layering over leggings and ankle boots, or choose your own colours for a different look.

Each leg warmer is worked seamlessly in the round from the upper cuff down. A long stockinette tube forms the gathered shape when worn, followed by a short tapered section and a stretchy lower cuff. The written pattern includes a round-by-round colour schedule, seven calf sizes and length and cuff adjustments.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner with experience knitting small circumferences in the round
  • Sizes: XS to 3XL, selected by calf circumference rather than clothing size; to fit calves approximately 30–51 cm / 11.8–20.1 in
  • Finished length: Approximately 68.6 cm / 27 in laid straight, designed to gather into soft folds when worn
  • Yarn: Worsted or light aran with good wool content and elastic recovery, approximately 510–735 m / 558–804 yd for the pair, depending on size
  • Needles: 5 mm / US 8 for the body and 4 mm / US 6 for ribbing, or sizes needed to obtain gauge; magic loop or double-pointed needles
  • Main gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rounds = 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette after blocking
  • Construction: Knitted in the round from top to bottom with colour changes, paired decreases and a stretchy bind-off; no seams
