Knit a softly draping cropped sweater with deep dropped shoulders, broad sleeves and relaxed ribbed edges. A delicate embroidered chain runs up the centre front, while raised shoulder joins and a narrow round neckline add detail to the simple stockinette fabric. The back is plain, and the wide sleeves stay open through the cuffs.

What you will knit

Work the front and back separately from the bottom up in flat stockinette and ribbing. Join the live shoulder stitches with a three-needle bind-off, pick up and knit the sleeves flat, then sew the sleeve and side seams. The neckband is worked in the round. Add the decorative centre-front chain after blocking.

Sizes and fit

Seven adult sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL.
To fit bust measurements: 76–138 cm / 29.9–54.3 in.
Finished bust measurements: 104.4–162.2 cm / 41.1–63.9 in.
Designed with 22–33 cm / 8.7–13 in of positive ease. Choose your size using both your bust and upper-arm measurements, with the full size tables in the PDF.

Skill level

Intermediate. Techniques include knitting and purling, 1×1 ribbing, rounded neckline shaping, joining live shoulders, picking up stitches, seaming, working a neckband in the round and simple chain-stitch embroidery.

Yarn, needles and gauge

• DK to light worsted yarn with 200–220 m / 219–241 yd per 100 g, worked with one strand. A soft wool and cotton or wool and linen blend is suggested.
• Yarn quantities: see the table below for each size.
• Main needles: 4.5 mm / US 7 circulars for knitting flat. Neckband needles: 4 mm / US 6, or the sizes needed to match the blocked gauge.
• Main blocked gauge: 18 stitches and 26 rows per 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette.
• Stitch holders, markers, a tapestry needle and standard finishing tools. No buttons are required.

Yarn needed by size

Worked with one strand. Approximate quantities include about 15% for swatching, seams and the decorative chain. Allow extra yarn if adding length.
