Knit a cheerful children's beanie with two pom poms, a short ribbed brim and plush garter stitch ridges. Its close-fitting shape makes a cosy winter accessory, with colour inspiration in lavender, pink, cream and more.

Pattern details

• Confident beginner level.
• Four size groups: 0–12 months, 1–3 years, 4–6 years and 7–10 years. Choose by the child's actual head circumference; the size chart covers approximately 42–54 cm (16½–21¼ in).
• Smooth chunky yarn, CYC category 5. Approximately 65–130 m for the hat, plus 15–25 m for the two pom poms, depending on size.
• 5.5 mm (US 9) needles for the body and 5 mm (US 8) for the ribbed brim, or sizes needed for gauge.
• Gauge: 12 stitches and 18 rounds per 10 cm (4 in) in garter stitch in the round, after blocking.
• Written PDF instructions with size tables, stitch guidance and finishing steps. Metric and imperial measurements.

Work from the brim upward in the round, alternating knit and purl rounds for the garter texture. Shape the crown, close the short top seam and securely attach one pom pom at each top corner.
