Small rope cables, softly ridged channels and a relaxed silhouette give this children's sweater its rich texture. The Willow Trail Pullover from Yana’s Pattern Studio has dropped shoulders, full sleeves and a round ribbed neckline. The photographed sample is a muted sage green, and the pattern works well with smooth chunky yarn that lets the raised stitches show.

What you will knit

A roomy, long-sleeved children's pullover with narrow two-stitch cables and garter channels. The hem, cuffs and crew neck are finished in 1×1 rib. The back, front and sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up. Held shoulder stitches are joined with a three-needle bind-off, the neckband is picked up and worked in the round, and the sleeves and side seams are sewn.

Sizes and fit

Five sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years.
To fit chest: 56–76 cm / 22–29.9 in.
Finished chest: 68.6–91.4 cm / 27–36 in.

The sweater is designed with 12.6–16 cm / 5–6.3 in of positive ease for the relaxed fit shown. Choose a size by the child's chest measurement and the finished measurements; age is a guide.

Skill level

Intermediate. Techniques include a four-row texture repeat with small C2F cables, increases and decreases, working with held stitches, picking up neckline stitches, a three-needle bind-off and seaming. The cable texture is provided as both written instructions and a stitch chart.

Yarn, needles and gauge

Use smooth chunky or bulky yarn with good stitch definition, around 90–110 m per 100 g. A soft wool or wool blend is suggested. Estimated yarn length is 450–850 m / 493–930 yd, depending on size. Allow extra for length changes or a yarn substitution.

Main needles: 6 mm / US 10.
Ribbing needles: 5 mm / US 8, including a short circular needle for the neckband.
Main blocked gauge: 14 stitches and 22 rows per 10 cm / 4 in in the textured pattern.
Relaxed rib gauge: 16 stitches and 24 rows or rounds per 10 cm / 4 in.

You will also need a cable needle, a spare needle for the shoulder join, stitch holders or waste yarn, removable markers, a tapestry needle and blocking supplies. Use needle sizes that achieve the stated gauges.
