DIGITAL PDF KNITTING PATTERN. No finished cardigan, yarn or tools will be shipped.
Softly flecked yarn, narrow ribs and a roomy shape make this an easy layer to reach for on cooler days. The Rowan Trail Ribbed Cardigan from Yana’s Pattern Studio has dropped shoulders, full sleeves and a high collar that can stand softly or turn down at the edge. Its open fronts are framed by one continuous ribbed band, with no buttons or other closures.
Knit the back, mirrored fronts and sleeves flat from the bottom up in 1x1 rib. After blocking, join the shoulders with a three needle bind off, attach the sleeves and sew the side and sleeve seams. Pick up the front opening and neckline to work the band, then shape the collar with short rows.
Size and fit
Five sizes are included: 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years. Choose by the child’s actual chest measurement and check the sleeve reach rather than relying on age alone.
To fit chest: 58.5 to 76 cm / 23 to 29.9 in.
Equivalent finished chest: 70.8 to 97.5 cm / 27.9 to 38.4 in, measured with the front edges just meeting without overlap or stretching.
The fit is roomy to oversized. The cardigan is designed to be worn open, and the PDF lists the measurements for every size.
Skill level
Intermediate. Techniques include flat 1x1 rib, increases in pattern, holding stitches, a three needle bind off, seaming, picking up stitches and wrap and turn short rows.
Yarn and tools
Use a super bulky dark olive base yarn held together with a fine warm ivory companion for the flecked fabric shown. A suitable single ready marled yarn can also be used if it matches both blocked gauges and the intended fabric.
Each strand requires 390 to 720 m / 427 to 787 yd across the five sizes, including the swatch and finishing allowance. Each of the two yarns needs the full listed length. For one ready marled yarn, use that length once. Detailed quantities are listed by size in the PDF.
Main needles: 9 mm / US 13 circular needles for working the pieces and band flat.
Cuff needles: 8 mm / US 11.
Main blocked gauge: 12 stitches and 16 rows per 10 cm in relaxed 1x1 rib.
You will also need a spare needle for the shoulder joins, stitch markers, waste yarn or holders, a tapestry needle and a tape measure. No buttons are required.
