A cosy turtleneck, softly marled stitches and a relaxed shape for everyday adventures. The Northshore Marl Pullover from Yana’s Pattern Studio is a children’s sweater with a deep folded collar, clean raglan lines and neatly ribbed cuffs and hem.

Work the sweater from the top down in the round, shaping the back neck with German short rows before continuing through the raglan yoke. The body and sleeves are knitted without seams, and the tall ribbed collar is picked up and worked last.

Size and fit

Five sizes are included: 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 years. Choose by chest measurement rather than age alone.

To fit chest: 58.5 to 76 cm / 23 to 29.9 in.
Finished chest: 66.7 to 90 cm / 26.2 to 35.4 in.
The intended fit is relaxed, with 8.2 to 14 cm of positive chest ease across the size range. The PDF includes the measurements for every size.

Skill level

Intermediate. Techniques include knitting in the round, German short rows, M1R and M1L increases, holding stitches, picking up stitches, paired decreases and 1x1 ribbing.

Yarn and tools

Bulky weight yarn with a soft, springy fabric and good recovery. A ready marled yarn gives the navy and warm grey effect shown in the photos; no colourwork rounds are required. Choose a yarn that is comfortable against the child’s neck.

Yarn quantity: 500 to 800 m / 547 to 875 yd across the five sizes, including the pattern’s separate swatch reserve. Detailed quantities are listed by size in the PDF.

Main needles: 6.5 mm / US 10½ circular needles, or the size needed to obtain gauge.
Ribbing needles: 5.5 mm / US 9.
Main blocked gauge: 12 stitches and 18 rounds per 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette.
You will also need stitch markers, waste yarn, a tapestry needle and a tape measure.
